Scope

Studio Alt Shift is a design and research studio for spaces, furniture and lighting.

We cover all stages of projects from design direction and concept development to on-site installation, fabrication and project management.

The studio specialises in translating abstract ideas into physical proposals, and works across a range of audiences covering residential, commercial and temporary interior spaces such as experimental installations and exhibition design.

About

Studio Alt Shift is a London based practice founded in 2006 by Shai Akram and Andrew Haythornthwaite.

Projects actively seek to uncover visual, spatial and material languages that are specific and particular to our clients. We are able to  achieve these results by working directly with fabrication industries, collaborating  to discover new contexts, applications and audiences for their processes and materials. The outcomes form the unique narratives of the spaces we design.

We have been invited to discuss this approach in an interview by LSN Global and shared this ideology at international conferences and workshops – most recently Moscow Design week, by the British Council.

Our clients range from private commissions, to independent businesses, to established manufacturers. The design studio works with clients across the entire process from conceptual direction to final production and installation. Completed projects range from physical outcomes such as commercial interiors (The Chin Chin Laboratories, London), furniture ranges, (Bench Seats and Things, produced for The Book Club with Turners and Moore), exhibition design (AHEC | SKN gallery) and product ranges (Acland Homeware, NZ). Research-based projects include conceptual / visualisation proposals (ThinkDO Camp – Marks and Spencers, UK), invited residencies (ARCO Furniture, NL) and experimental material research (Corian DuPont, IT).

Works are held in the permanent collection of the Design Museum, London and MoMA, New York and has been published  extensively internationally.  Akram and Haythornthwaite also enjoy teaching onto under-graduate and Masters programs at a range of institutions including University of the Arts London and the Royal College of Art.
